Blogger 101: What You Did Not Know About Fashion Bloggers

It's no secret that a lot has been said about bloggers. Fashion bloggers, in particular, are at the receiving end of the worst of that. For one, we do showcase our bodies and outfits to the whole world. It takes a lot of guts and confidence to be able to do that... sadly, some people make light of it. After all, fashion blogging showcases two areas that a lot of people relegate as trivial and shallow pursuits: fashion and shopping.

However, not all fashion bloggers are the same. We are not walking billboards drumming up publicity for certain brands. There is a lot more to fashion blogging than meets the eye.

We do have other careers aside from blogging!

This is probably the most common misconception that people have of fashion bloggers - women who freeload off of others and get items from various brands or sponsors. Sorry to break your bubble, but we're not. I do have a full time job and several contributing stints in some of the top beauty magazines online. I blog out of hobby... anything else that comes with it is a bonus!

We buy our own clothes!

Getting free items or samples for review is nice. But majority of the outfits and articles of clothing that I feature on the blog are purchased by me. I believe the same applies with most other fashion bloggers, too.

We do have other interests aside from shopping and fashion!

Just because you see us talking about shopping and fashion all the time, that does not mean we don't have other interests. I like to share a bit of my personal life in the blog. However, that is not even close to 10% of what is really going on in my life.

We don't always monetize our blogs!

Yes, there are a few sponsorship opportunities that come my way through this blog. But if there aren't any, it's not like I am going to stop blogging.

We're not models!

Sorry for the awkward photos and poses... I'm still working on it.

We don't shoot like fashion magazines do!

In order to distinguish myself as a fashion blogger, I try to focus on styles that reflect my everyday wear - things that I would actually wear in real life. Hence, I don't have a slipper or rubber shoes hidden somewhere that I quickly slip into once I finish shooting in high heels. What you see is what you get!

What are your thoughts on how fashion bloggers are perceived?

    1. Indeed!! It's so annoying when people assume we get hand-outs all the time.

  3. This is a really interesting post! I started blogging recently and haven't really shared it with many of my friends, mostly because I'm in vet school and the majority (not all by any means) of people are just not interested in it and don't really get it. I definitely think people see it as frivolous maybe but I have to think about how it is my hobby and I am really enjoying it and other peoples hobby may just be watching TV (which was mine before!) and they may not understanding how filling it is for me :)

  6. Great post! Some people spend a ton of money on golf as a hobby because it's fun. They spend money to play on some courses, and they buy special golf clothes to play in. They even have full-time jobs:) Some of the really great ones get paid to do it full-time as a profession and get sponsorships. I haven't heard criticism about playing golf as a superficial hobby or as a profession. I think that fashion blogging should be looked at similarly:)

  7. This is a fantastic post! Although I don't work full-time (just part-time from home), blogging takes up a TON of time. But it's my hobby and I enjoy it. Sponsorships are amazing and the longer I blog, the more opportunities come up. I decided early on that I wasn't going to have ads on my site or have making money a top priority. When opportunities present themselves, I only jump on them if they're relevant to the blog. Being asked to review men's suits--so not going to happen! We are definitely more than our blogs--it's just a little piece of ourselves we choose to share with the world. I don't think there's anything wrong with that!

  9. All of these are true! My outfits are what I actually wear to work or somewhere else I go to! I hope they get the idea that just because we blog about what we wear or what we bought from a store, that's the only thing that we love to do and want to talk about. Honestly, I get hurt when people I know say the word "blogger" with slight disgust as if we were doing something wrong. Some people just don't get it. :(

  12. I know exactly what you mean... it has always seemed strange to me that people assume because you have an interest in "frivolous" things you aren't a person of substance. But, everyone is interested in something frivolous whether it's fashion or electronics or whatever. Love your post!

  13. Omg, I loved this so much. Everything you said is totally true!! I've found fashion blogging to be quite the opposite of superficial as so many women are cheerleading each other on and everyone is learning to love their own bodies by showcasing them to the world! XO

  14. This has been such a fun post to read through! I agree with most (if not all!) of these points, particularly the concept of not having any other interests haha. Thankfully, I've only come across very open-minded people on my blogging journey so far, so I consider myself quite fortunate on that front!

By the way, thanks so much for letting me know how you found my blog, that's always interesting to find out! Also yes I would love to connect via social media - we're already connected on Twitter, however I'm also on Bloglovin' and Instagram :)

    Have a lovely weekend!!

  18. I do agree with all of your statements! I am not making any money of my blog and I do have another job. I just currently trying to hone up my skills and nothing more. I really think people make generalizations about fashion bloggers because there are a few that are making a lot of money out of it and are getting modeling jobs. But that is probably about 1 to 10 percent of the bloggers out there.

  19. Great post!! You nailed it with everything you said! I love blogging about fashion and beauty because it excites me and make me happy. It is my "get-away" from my busy everyday life.
