Blogging 101: How Often Should You Update Content?

When browsing tips for blogging, one of the most often repeated tip is to update content regularly. But how do you define 'regularly' in this case? Some say three times a week would suffice. Others insist on posting fresh content daily. Meanwhile, I've also encountered some tips that say publishing multiple posts a day is better for SEO. If you're a budding fashion blogger or writer, this can be a daunting task. So, which of these is correct?

The theory behind regular updates on blog content hinges on the idea that it provides your readers with something new to look forward to. When your visitors come to your website and they don't see fresh and updated content, they will probably never visit again (or not as often as you'd like for them to). But if you have something new to offer, then this will keep their interest up - resulting in a higher likelihood of return visit.

Based on my own experience, I try to maintain 3-4 blog posts per week. I do have a full-time job and keeping up with daily posts is something that I simply cannot handle. However, if you work on your blog full-time, then you should consider daily posting to attain maximum traffic and growth. Just make sure that you can handle the writing and marketing of your posts. After all, your job as a blogger does not end with writing fresh content - you have to market and promote the content, too.

If you are looking to maintain a steady growth in traffic and followers, posting once per day or posting 3-4 times a week should suffice. However, you should not lose sight on the main goal for posting - enticing your readers and providing them with fresh information to digest. Are you compromising quality of your posts for the sake of publishing a new post? If that is the case, then you might want to re-think your strategy of posting frequently. Also, what you do off your site is of equal importance to what you do on your site.

Use your own judgment when determining the frequency of updating content on your website. Here are parameters you should use to determine your blog plan: 1) the availability of time, 2) your blogging goals, and 3) your off-site marketing plan.

How often do you update content on your blog?

  1. Thoughtful post, Abby! I agree that daily posts can be too much for someone with a full-time job. You also make a really valid point that posting frequently does not mean you need to lose sight of the actual content. Quality is first! I am only hobby blogging for now, so I'm not really wrapped up in hitting a weekly/monthly quota with my blog. However, if I ever started to blog full-time I would aim for around 2-3. A very popular blog (not sure if you've heard of them) A Beautiful Mess conducted a survey and found out that their 3 posts per week was almost too much for their readers to digest. I think you're right to say it depends on your blog and your situation.

  2. I think you have some great tips here. Since my sister and I have started our blog we have changed how often we post a few times. At first we posted 5 times Monday-Friday. Then we decided to add in weekend posts. Now we post sometimes twice daily. It is easier for us to post more often since we both work together on the blog. Some weeks it is hard to find time for blogging when life gets hectic.

  3. Great points Abby! I usually publish 3-4 times a week as well but all of them are already scheduled during the weekend since I don't have much time during the weekdays because of work.

  7. I totally agree with you, if you have a full time job you won't be able to post more than once daily, and also i think posting 3-4 times a week it's ok even tho I don't do it, and I probably should... sometimes it's my full time job that gets on the way and some other times it's just that I'm too lazy and too tired to post.

  8. This is SO true. I hate to admit it, but sometimes life gets in the way...last week I was so sick & then had to spend the weekend catching up on school projects, papers, etc. & I didn't have time for any new content! I felt terrible, but I have to admit that blogging is not my full-time job and so I can't devote all of my time to it!
Thanks for the great reminders though :)

  9. Thank you for the tips! I also work full time and have a small business and I only update 5 days a week. It takes a lot of time and organizing so I can't post more than that.

  13. I love blogging, but it definitely is a time consuming hobby. It takes a lot to come up with content and photos that I hope will draw in readers. I try to aim for 2-3 posts per week, but I post an instagram photo almost every day to keep my name out there and spend some time reading other blogs every day as well.
